Eclectic

Updated: Aug 8, 2020

Adjective

1. deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.

That is true of how I like to do my interiors for myself and my clients. Eclectic for me means that you mix old with new, 16th Century with 21st Century, traditional with modern, tribal with contemporary, or other periods and styles but, and this is what is important, it all has to be cohesive, complimentary, and aesthetic to enhance your lifestyle and interior.

So, following are some images of interiors that I admire and why. It is important to understand what makes for a well designed interior and how you can use some of those key tools for your home. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

This room by Isabel López-Quesada is a beautiful balance of furniture, art, color and texture. Note how the green curved sofa wraps horizontally around the octagonal coffee table while vertically similar curves in the wall sconce, the top of the armoire and the black spheres in the abstract painting repeat the rhythm. The green sofa is complimented by the similarly toned green rhino sculpture and the jardiniere. The cushions on the two sofas add another layer of colors and texture to the horizontal landscape. I love the contract of the old armoire against the white walls and sisal flooring. It is eclectic while being restful.

This room is from tadeunasser but I do not know who designed the room. It is an elegant and balanced eclectic interior with the pair of mid-century sofas juxtaposed with the pair of Louis armchairs on one side and the Ribbon chair by Pierre Paulin on the right. The colors of the textiles compliment the abstract art while the rosewood coffee table anchors the room.

Again, this room is from tadeunasser instagram page with no reference to the interior designer. I love the drama and contrast of the taupe walls against the white trim and dark timber floors. Then layered over this the black and gold of the ormolu commode with the gold velvet Louis side chairs with the modernist gold & white mirror above. All this is balanced with the black urns with tall white orchards, gold candlesticks with white candles and sculpture in centre. The drama continues opposite with black lacquered modern coffee table and contemporary chrome stool.

This room successfully acknowledges the high ceiling with the large ornate black framed mirror that repeats the vertical panels of the black framed windows. In contract the ornate ceiling rose is a juxtapose to the modern pendant light. The black mantel and fireplace on the left add another height to the room that balances well against the mirror. The low 20th century furniture accentuates the ceiling height and adds the third height to the landscape. I love the contrast of the tribal timber end table and woven rug against the Gae Aulenti marble coffee table. It is a handsome monochromatic room.
